The holiday season brings plenty of opportunities to celebrate, from office parties at Carmen’s Bar & Restaurant to family gatherings at home. Getting ready for these special moments often means styling your hair, choosing the perfect outfit and adding those finishing touches that help you feel your best. If you’re among the nearly 20% of people with hearing loss, you also need to make sure your holiday prep is hearing aid-safe.

How Getting Ready Can Affect Your Hearing Aids

Today’s hearing aids are durable, but they can still be sensitive to things like heat styling, moisture, makeup and hair products. The good news is that protecting your hearing aids doesn’t mean skipping your routine.

Simple Tips for Party Prep

Here are several easy ways to keep your hearing aids safe and sounding great during the holidays:

  • Loop in your stylist. Hairstylists are typically familiar with hearing aids, but it’s still helpful to let them know you wear them. They may suggest removing your devices during washing or coloring for added safety.
  • Give your devices a break during styling. Remove your hearing aids before blow-drying, curling, straightening, showering or applying hairspray. Once your hair is dry and set, you can put them back in.
  • Make clean hands a priority. Makeup, lotions and skincare products can easily transfer from your hands to your devices. Washing your hands before handling your hearing aids helps keep them clean and free from cosmetics.
  • Be patient with polish. Fresh nail polish can smudge easily and may leave residue on hearing aids. After a manicure, allow plenty of drying time before inserting or adjusting your devices.
  • Put your hearing aids in their case. When you’re not wearing your hearing aids, place them in a protective case instead of leaving them on the bathroom counter. This keeps them safe from spills or accidental knocks and, if you wear rechargeable hearing aids, gives them the chance to charge before the party.

Taking a few proactive steps will help ensure your hearing aids continue to provide clear, comfortable sound throughout every holiday toast and festive song.
