A day of basking in the sun at Lake Superior is a great way to spend your summer. While you’re water skiing, kayaking or simply chilling on the beach, don’t forget to practice a few lakeside care tips to keep your hearing aids functioning well all season long. Let’s take a look at a couple of those tips below.
Keep Your Hearing Aids Dry
Swimming in Lake Superior or taking a boat out on the water can expose your hearing aids to water. That doesn’t mean you have to steer clear of the lake. It only means that you should take a few precautions. Consider the following:
- Wear hearing aid covers. Grab a pair of hearing aid covers to protect against accidental splashes while you’re out boating.
- Bring hearing aid clips. Hearing aid clips attach your hearing aids to your shirt to protect against accidental drops. They’re a great option if you’re worried your devices will drop in the water.
- Bring a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier or drying jar is a great addition to your beach day packing list. The helpful tools dry moisture from your hearing aids to help protect them from damage. If your hearing aids get splashed or feel damp after an extra-humid day, pop them in their dehumidifier for a few hours or overnight.
Some modern hearing aids boast an impressive waterproof rating of IP68, meaning they’re generally safe to encounter water for short periods.[1] Double check with your hearing aid specialist or manual to see how water-resistant or waterproof your devices are. Even if they’re waterproof, we don’t recommend dunking your head under the water in the lake; it may be difficult to find your hearing aids in the murky water if they fall out.
Keep Your Hearing Aids Cool
Excessive heat can damage the delicate internal components of your hearing aids. Avoid storing your hearing aids in the car or in direct sunlight; store them in their case, in the shade when not in use.
Your hearing aids can bring all your favorite lake sounds back to life, and taking good care of your devices during lake days is the best way to ensure clear sound. For more information on hearing aid care or to schedule a repair & service appointment, contact Hearing Wellness Center today.
