When you buy a new pair of shoes, it often takes a little time for them to feel just right. Hearing aids are much the same. After you leave our clinic with your new devices, you’ll begin an adjustment period that allows your brain and ears to rediscover sounds more clearly and comfortably. During this time, you may notice new sounds you haven’t heard in a while or experience the world a bit more vividly than expected. This is a positive sign that your hearing aids are functioning exactly as they’re designed to. With regular use, these sounds will quickly begin to feel natural, familiar and enjoyable.
Let’s take a look at a few things you can do to make the adjustment period smooth and easy.
Learn About Your Devices
When we fit you for your new hearing aids, we’ll take time to guide you through their features and smartphone app so you feel confident using them in everyday life. Once you’re home, continuing to explore your devices can be a fun and helpful way to personalize your listening experience. You might lower the volume slightly while relaxing at home or turn it up when you’re out enjoying time with friends. The more familiar you become with your hearing aids, the more confident you’ll feel.
Start in Quiet Spaces
Giving yourself a gentle start can make your adjustment feel more enjoyable. Calm environments, like your home or the Duluth Library, are wonderful places to begin.
These spaces allow you to notice pleasant everyday sounds, like the hum of your dishwasher or the patter of your children playing in the house, that you may not have heard clearly in some time.
Involve Your Friends and Family
A 2022 study found that hearing aid adoption is significantly more likely when you bring a significant other to your audiology appointment. Not only will involving your family help you feel comfortable in the hearing aid process, but they’ll be excited to embark on this journey with you!
